Graduation, etc.
I remember after every year in high school, and the first 2 years of undergrad - I wrote these long sappy blog posts about how everyone has made an outstanding impact on my life and listed them all by name with little shoutouts. It’s kinda funny that after Graduation (when I am moving farthest away in St. Louis), I neither feel the urgency to write such an emo post nor do I feel like I really will leave the friends I feel closest to. I know it is not that I have lost my “emo-ness,” because being diagnosed with clinical dysthymia this semester definitely confirms that I perhaps have a bit more than most, but perhaps it is my sense of comfort knowing that those who care will always be there.
One thing I do feel the need to say though is that I will miss our beautiful school. The University of Virginia. I am not talking about the students there but also the tradition, the education, and the pride we have all come across that makes our school such a magical place to experience 4 years of undergraduate school. After Graduation, many “young adults” that went to other colleges (current/alumni) and many “old adults” asked me - “Why didn’t the faculty just move Graduation inside because it was raining, cold, and muddy? Wasn’t that a bad choice on their part?” To this question I could only reply - “It’s because we, the students, didn’t want them to.” Their surprised faces helped me realize how unique the love we have for our school is compared to other universities. We do not only celebrate sports, like many others do, but we know the University’s history and the message our founder, President Thomas Jefferson, wanted us to leave with.
Here’s to the class of 2009! To the memories of our history, to our future, and to those who will continue on our legacy.
