The lovely Joanne Mosuela sent me a link today regarding seafood recommendations based on how the fish are caught / farmed and what it has to do with you, me, and the world as we know it. I thought, “I think I make okay choices - my seafood is pretty mainstream, why not check myself out?”
I first turn to salmon. I recently bought a large bag of Atlantic Salmon from Costco to make on occasion. As everyone knows, I have rheumatoid arthritis so those omega-3’s all those health nuts are chasing after - I’m unfortunately in the same boat. Well, Atlantic Salmon is without a doubt the best for me (or so they WANT me to believe) so let’s take a look at the recommendations, shall we?
Salmon : AVOID! Farmed Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Sake Worldwide Farmed
“Seafood Watch recommend all species of wild-caught salmon as ocean-friendly alternatives to farmed Atlantic salmon. Salmon farms impact the environment in numerous ways – pollution, chemicals, parasites and non-native farmed fish that escape from salmon farms all affect the natural habitat and the native salmon in the surrounding areas.”
… aaaand it’s a no-go! 0/1 Kristine.. 0/1…
Next up - HALIBUT. I gave up a purchase of deli meats to buy a bag of halibut as well. I figure another good way to get some fishes in me, stay a little healthier, and make myself that much closer to mercury poisoning. It’s okay though, I bought Alaskan Halibut. But is it really okay??
Pacific Halibut : Best Choice! Alaskan Halibut U.S., Canadian Pacific Wild-caught
And we got a winner! 1/2 Kristine.. you got lucky.
Well, that’s all that’s in my refrigerator now. 50/50 may be a good ratio right? I have food needs! But WHAT IS THIS? A link for SUSHI?
